"It is a simple and tremendous problem of life: that of fidelity", is how Hugo von Hofmannsthal described the core of their third opera together, Ariadne auf Naxos, in a letter to Richard Strauss. To live does not mean to persevere and hold on to what has been lost. If you want to live, you have to let go, forget, get over yourself - constantly transform yourself. This is what a young opera composer experiences in this work when he is confronted with the stubborn wishes of his patron; just like the protagonist of his opera, Ariadne, who, abandoned by her lover, Theseus, expects only death. But things turn out differently... Strauss and Hofmannsthal let the opposites collide: Tragedy and comedy, light music and grand opera, playfulness and seriousness. Thus, in the mirroring of art and life, between gaze and gaze, the unfathomable mystery of transformation takes place. Musical Direction: Kent Nagano Production and stage: Dmitri Tcherniakov Dramaturgy: Angela Beuerle, Michael Sangkuhl

Jens Harzer takes on the role of narrator. Ida Aldrian sings the alto part.

Opéra Fantastique in five acts Libretto by Jules Barbier Based on the play by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré Edited by Michael Kaye and Jean-Christophe Keck The poet E. T. A. Hoffmann as the protagonist of his own fantastic tales: In his encounter with three women - Olympia, Antonia, and Giulietta - he searches in vain for love for love and for himself. Will he draw the strength for art from his failure in life? art from his failures in life? Or will he fail in himself, even in alcohol? Like in a kaleidoscope, ever new constellations and shimmering colors constellations and shimmering colors German romanticism and French esprit. The composer died over the work without the first performance, which took place in a greatly greatly abridged form. Since then the performance history itself has been an exciting crime play, surprising discoveries have made Hoffmann's tales appear again and again in a new in a new and fascinating light. The Wagner CyclesEin Projekt der Dresdner Musikfestspiele Gefördert vom Kuratorium KölnMusik e.V.

Thu, May 1, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, Kent Nagano (Conductor), IRCAM (Live electronics)
Pierre Boulez’s »Répons« was one of the remarkable highlights of Kent Nagano’s »Philharmonische Akademie« at St. Michaelis at the beginning of his tenure as General Music Director in Hamburg. He staged the »interchange« between chamber ensemble and soloists to great effect, as well as between electronically altered and unaltered sounds, within the sacred walls of Hamburg’s »Michel« church. The major construction project for the »Elbphilharmonie« was still underway at the time. Ten years later, Nagano revisits this exceptional work by the composer, conductor and founder of the IRCAM Institute in Paris, bringing it to the new and yet already firmly established concert hall on Hamburg’s River Elbe.

Dr. Kieron is a brilliant scientist, respected and feared by his colleagues. But what nobody suspects is that every night he is haunted in his dreams by three recurring beings, enigmatic numbers and mysterious symbols, which he experiences with unbearably intense feelings. It is from these apparitions that he receives his scientific visions - the fundamental basis of his success. He also leads a double life. A highly respected scientist by day, he dives into the shady underworld at night in a restless search for human happiness. But his control over himself is slipping away. In order to satisfy his irrepressible urge for scientific knowledge and an emotionally fulfilling life, Kieron wants to have his dreams analyzed and enters into an alliance with the diabolical master Astaroth, with fatal consequences. Unsuk Chin drew inspiration for her second opera from the life and work of the legendary physicist Wolfgang Pauli and his relationship with the psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung. Faustian material for the 21st century. Die Illusionen des William Mallory

Sat, May 24, 2025, 19:30
Rodolphe Bruneau-Boulmier (Komposition), Kent Nagano (Musical Director), Inge Kloepfer (Text), Georges Delnon (Inszenierung), Marie-Thérèse Jossen (Costume), Ralf Waldschmidt (Dramaturgie), Mitglieder des Philharmonischen Staatsorchesters Hamburg (Orchestra)
At the zenith of his career as a board member of a major corporation, disaster suddenly befalls the former working-class son William Mallory. Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra / Kent Nagano

Sun, Jun 29, 2025, 11:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, Audi Jugendchorakademie, Mojca Erdmann (Soprano), Evan Hughes (Bariton), Kent Nagano (Conductor)
In this concert, which concludes Kent Nagano’s ten-year tenure as General Music Director, two essential strands of his concert dramaturgy for Hamburg come together. On the one hand the reference back to tradition, and the Hamburg-based composer Johannes Brahms to be precise, whose four symphonies have been performed by the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra both in its Hamburg concerts and on tour in recent years. And then sounds of the present day, in the form of pioneering world premieres. A brief review conjures up performances of Widmann’s ARCHE, Dusapin’s »Waves«, and Shepherd’s »On a Clear Day«, to name just a few outstanding new works. This concert – a crowning finale and farewell at the same time – sees the premiere of a new symphony by the young Argentinian composer Alex Nante, in his inimitably dreamlike, spiritual sound language.
